In a joint operation conducted by the 87 Batallion of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the narcotics control bureau (NCB) wing of the Amritsar police, 450gm heroin was recovered from a field across the fencing line at the India-Pakistan border on Wednesday.
The field is in Ferozepur sector that falls under the jurisdiction of the border out post at Dharma.
BSF deputy inspector general (DIG) RS Kataria said that a joint search operation was launched on the basis of a tip-off.
“Our team recovered one packet of the contraband, suspected to be heroin from a field between the international border and the security fence. The search was conducted at around 8.30am,” he said.
Kataria refrained from disclosing the name of the farmer from whose field the contraband was recovered.
A senior BSF officer, on condition of anonymity, said, “Pakistani smugglers throw drug packets into the agricultural fields on the India side. Most of the farmers and smugglers work in collusion.”
“Keeping in view the vulnerability of the border and the heightened activities of smugglers and anti-national elements, the Punjab frontier BSF inspector general (IG) Mukul Goel has issued operational guidelines to all sectors for strengthening of the border domination to effectively check the activities of anti-national elements,” said Kataria.
“The enhanced vigil by BSF and its sister agencies has thwarted the smugglers’ attempt to push drug consignments into India,” he added.
